The Kitchen Sink: Week of October 8th - 12th

Social Studies
Our lesson focuses on the Navajo culture and how the Navajo adapted to desert life.  We discussed how, in order to live in the desert, the Navajo planted seeds deep enough to use underground water.  They also learned to hunt animals in the desert.  Today, Navajo land is part of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, in the Southwestern United States.  The Navajo people passed on their culture to their children, which includes their beliefs, ideas, religion, language, arts and stories. We will have a quiz on Friday, October 12th.

Math
This week our class is starting a new mathematics unit about multiplication and division called, Equal Groups.  During this unit, students develop the understanding that we use multiplication to combine a number of equal groups and that we use division to split a quantity into equal groups.  Students will also solve multiplication combinations and related division problems by skip counting or applying known multiplication combinations.  There will NOT be a math quiz this week.

Science
We are wrapping up our Gravity Unit.  The students should know:  Gravity is a force that pulls objects towards each other and towards the center of the Earth.  The force of gravity can be overcome.  The more mass an object has the more difficult it is to overcome gravity.  There will be a test on Friday, October 12th.  Be sure to study the notes taken in your Science Journal, your workbook pages 63-65, and check out the blog.  The student workbook can also be accessed through the blog.
