Social Studies
Our lesson focuses on the Cherokee life in the forests of the Appalachian Mountains and the conflicts that arose with the arrival of the European settlers. The Cherokee depended on forests, rivers, and rich soil to survive. We will notice that today, many people heat their homes in winter and cool them in summer. It wasn't always like this. People years ago lived in different houses at different seasons. We will have our quiz on Friday, October 19th.
Math
This week we will continue with our Equal Groups Unit. One way that your child has explored multiplication is by skip counting. You can continue to build on this work by skip counting with your child at home, in the car, or during any other free time you may have.
We will have a quiz on Wednesday. To prepare for this quiz students should review pages 1-9 in Unit 5. Please keep in mind that during our lessons we refer to the “x” in a multiplication equation as “groups of.” Therefore, 4 x 3 would be stated as 4 groups of 3. This helps the students conceptually understand the meaning of multiplication instead simply memorizing their multiplication facts before understanding what it truly means to multiply.
Science
We are beginning our study on the properties of matter. We will be working in the next few weeks to answer the following essential questions: How is matter measured? How can we observe and describe matter? What are the properties of water as it changes states? We will focus first on mass, volume, and temperature. If you can send in a bag of Jelly Belly jelly beans for an upcoming exploration, please let us know!
