The Kitchen Sink: Week of November 5th - 9th

Social Studies
Our lesson this week is called, "Becoming a Country" from the textbook pages 124-127.  Our discussion will help the students understand how the colonies broke away from British rule and formed a new country.  The students will become familiar with the vocabulary words, independence and democracy.  Ask your child who wrote the Declaration of Independence!  They will have a quiz on Friday, November 9th.

Math
This week we will continue our Equal Groups unit.  Please continue to practice skip counting with your child to gain fluency.
The lessons will focus on solving 2-digit multiplication problems by using smaller and simpler 2-digit numbers.  Students should consider ways to break apart the problems in order to make them easier to solve.  For example:  14 x 8 = (10 x 8) + (4 x 8)
We will have a quiz on Friday.  To prepare for this quiz students should review pages 1-4 & 12-18 in their “Multiplication and Division Packet #2” that is located in their math folder.

Science
We are continuing our work in Chapter 3 on Matter and its Properties.  After completing this chapter, your child will know how to measure and compare the length, volume, mass, and temperature of objects.  They will also learn how to compare matter using some of its properties such as size, shape, color, texture, and hardness; how to identify the states of matter; and how water changes states.  Check out our classroom blog to see some of the fun explorations we have been doing in class!
