Essential Exploration: What makes something unique?

Table Seven Scientists
We are working in our Matter and Its Properties unit for Science.  The students have practiced how to measure and compare length, volume, mass and temperature of objects.  This essential exploration occurred during our 3rd week of our studies.  It is called, "What makes something unique?".

Table Two Scientists
The students were provided with common items to observe with their senses (except taste!).  The students recorded how each item looks, feels, and smells.  They were asked to record their observations in their Science Journal.  After recording their own observations, the students met with their peer partner to share ideas.

During closing meeting, we discussed words used to describe objects such as size, color, shape, texture, and hardness.  We also discussed the different meanings, such as properties, mass and volume.  The students then compared two items to each other:  a bowling ball and a tennis ball to compare and contrast their similiarities and differences.
