The Kitchen Sink: The Week of November 13th - 20th

Social Studies
This week we will focus on the founding and growth of St. Louis (pages 150-153).  During the 1800s, thousands of people began to move west and one place they settled was St. Louis.  It began as a trading post on the banks of the Mississippi River.  Ask your child in what ways the river helped St. Louis grow.  The quiz for this lesson will be on Tuesday, November 20.  Please note the change in the normal quiz routine.

Math
This week we will continue our Equal Groups unit where the students will be introduced to the concept of division.  Please continue to practice skip counting with your child to gain fluency.
The lessons will focus on the following:
1. Understanding divisions as the splitting of a quantity into equal groups.
2. Using the inverse relationship between multiplication and division to solve story problems.
For example 7 x __ = 21 can also be written as 21 ÷ 7 = __
We will NOT have a math quiz this week.

Science
We are continuing our study on the Properties of Matter. The students should know that matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.  Properties of matter include size, shape, color, texture and hardness.  The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.  Please help your child be successful by preparing for the quiz on Tuesday, November 20.  You can read the workbook pages 105-107 and 109-111.  You can also look over the study guides that have been stapled inside Science Journals or check out the blog.
