The Kitchen Sink: September 17-21

Social Studies
This week our DOSS will focus on the geography of the United States, including major land and water features and physical features.  We will also discuss what natural resources are and how people use these resources.  Please make sure your child studies their blue DOSS sheet night to be prepared for the quiz on Friday.  You may check out our blog for access to the textbook online.

Math
This week we will continue our addition and subtraction unit titled Collections and Travel Stories.  The lessons will focus on the following concepts:
1. Gaining fluency with subtraction facts related to addition combinations up to 10+10
2. Finding the difference (using a number line) between 2 and 3-digit numbers, including 100
3. Using multiples of 100 as a landmark to solve subtraction problems using a number line
4. Finding the difference between two number by either adding or subtracting
For example: 100 – 37 = _____ OR 37 + _____ = 100
We will have a quiz on Wednesday.  To prepare for this quiz students should review Unit 3, pages 35-47 in their Math Investigations Workbook, particularly addition starter problems.

Science
We will focus on answering the essential question:  What is the effect of the Sun's energy and how can it be measured?  The students should be able to identify the Sun as a star that emits light and heat energy.  The students will complete an exploration demonstrating that radiant energy from the Sun can heat objects and when the Sun is not present, heat may be lost.  Check out our class blog!
